When David Crosby last visited Ravinia in 2014, he kindly took a moment aside to record a birthday greeting for Ramsey Lewis, who was then about to turn 80. When we asked if he had a special message, in a split second he added, with a sparkling grin, “Let’s play!” A musician’s musician, in that moment it was a clear sight of how much he cared about seeking and making great music, and having fun along the way. While we also chatted about music education and its positive impact on children, we found ourselves reminiscing about the first instruments we picked up, when Crosby spoke up about something more he wished he’d learned along the way.
